Phonics Screening Check
St Joseph's uses 'Read, Write Inc' which is a robust systematic approach to teaching phonics as the building blocks to developing confident and proficient readers.
The 'Phonics Screening Check' administered to pupils at the end of Year 1 assess how well the children have learnt all their 'sounds' to help them decode, blend and segment words when reading.
Our 'Phonics Screening Check' scores at the end of Year 1 are consistently above National and Local results which significantly impacts on the percentage of pupils achieving the expected levels and above in reading at the end of Key Stage Two (Year 6).
