Phonics and Reading
For several years St. Joseph’s Infant School has used elements of Read, Write Inc. alongside Letters and Sound whilst still teaching English as a specific subject area. Phonics begins informally in Nursery and takes place every day in school in Nursery, Reception and Year One. By Year Two it is rare for a child not to be a fluent reader as evidenced by our high phonics attainment results year on year. We recognise the children’s need to develop strategic comprehension skills and teach this through small group Reciprocal Reading and also through Cracking Comprehension as well as Bug Club.
We hold parent workshops and demonstrate Reading Sessions so parents can observe how their child is taught to become an independent reader. We encourage all children to read on a daily basis at home as well as in school across the whole school curriculum. We support parents to ensure that they are able to help their child develop not only their reading skills but also a love for reading.
