Maths
At St Joseph's, we know that Maths is the foundation to many aspects of life and future opportunities. We believe that a strong Maths education should prepare pupils for the world they are growing up in.
Teaching for mastery
White Rose use a mastery approach to maths teaching. This is a research-driven teaching and learning method that meets the goals of the National Curriculum.
A mastery approach…
- Puts numbers first: confidence with numbers is the first step to competency in the curriculum as a whole.
- Puts depth before breadth: we reinforce knowledge again and again.
- Encourages collaboration: children can progress through the schemes as a group, supporting each other as they learn.
- Focuses on fluency, reasoning and problem solving: it gives children the skills they need to become competent mathematicians.
Concrete - Pictorial - Abstract Approach
The White Rose is an evidence-based scheme of work that has transformed maths teaching over the past decade and includes structured problem-solving, mathematical communication using the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach. Research shows that when children are introduced to a new concept, working with concrete physical resources and pictorial representations leads to a better understanding of abstract concepts.
At St Joseph's, we are also placing a greater emphasis on oracy in maths, encouraging pupils to articulate their thinking clearly and confidently. We assess pupil's understanding and progress throughout the year with end of block/ topic and end of term assessments and meet regularly with parents and carers throughout the year to discuss their child's progress.
As a federation, we value the support given by parents and carers and try our best to support you in helping your child at home. We provide regular workshops for parents as well as well as links to home learning videos and resources.
